What do you think when you hear the word 'BULLYING'? Many people associate bullying with physical violence - punching, kicking, pushing, pulling hair, etc. But this is not the only form of bullying. Bullying can also be:

  • Calling people unkind names;
  • Spreading rumours and gossiping;
  • Taking or damaging another persons belongings;
  • Leaving someone out of games, activities or conversations.

In fact - Bullying is ANY form of repeated and targeted behaviour that is intended to make someone unhappy.

The message from magician, Sarah Lewis is that ALL BULLYING IS BAD! The children sat enthralled as she made scarves and handkerchiefs appear from a rolled up piece of card, and pulled boxes of beautiful paper flowers from a seemingly empty paper bag. They listened intently as she explained how people always have feelings inside them, even though we may not be able to see them.

When a helpful volunteer went to assist the magician and 'kept getting it wrong', the audience laughed. As this was part of the show, we were meant to laugh and the volunteer had done everything she was supposed to. There were many thoughtful expressions when Sarah explained that when we laugh at other people's mistakes and misfortunes in real life, this causes hurt feelings and can also be bullying behaviour.

After the show, Sarah commented how well the children had responded to the message. They gave very thoughtful answers and showed a good understanding of the consequences and causes of bullying behaviour.
