Y3 Visit to the Sefton Coast
19/21/27 September 2006

Every year as part of their Geography topic, each of our Year 3 classes makes a visit along the Sefton Coast. During their visit, the children experience a wide range of natural and manmade environments, and study the diverse habitats for a variety of plants and animals.

There are three main stopping points on the tour:

Crosby Marina

Crosby Marina

Most, if not all of our children will have visited Crosby Marina with family and friends on a sunny summer day. This visit gave them the opportunity to explore a familiar location in a different way. As well as being a place for leisure, the Marina is situated next to Liverpool Freeport; a very busy industrial area.

It is also home to a wide variety of bird, plant and animal life.

Whilst at Crosby Marina, the children made some observational drawings of the things they saw. The photos below show the children at work. Click any picture for a larger view.

Ainsdale

The next stopping point was Ainsdale Ranger Station. After a short break for lunch, the Coastal Rangers took our children down on to the beach. There they found a wide variety of shells and seaweed that had been washed up by the tide.

Next, the children were taken to explore the sand dunes, home to the endangered Natterjack Toad. They were taught about the importance of preserving this very special habitat. After this, following careful instructions, each child made a small collage by collecting petals and leaves from the plants and flowers.

Southport Pier

A short journey down the Coastal Road took the children to Southport. Here, they walked the length of the recently refurbished pier. This area of Southport has changed a lot over the last few years with the development of a retail and leisure park, including shops, a bowling alley, a cinema and restaurants.

Here you can see the familiar sight of the rollercoasters at Pleasureland. Now that the funfair has closed down, there will be even more changes to the Southport skyline.

Another journey along the coast road and the children head back to school. It had been an exciting day, with lots to see and do. Of course, a school trip isn't complete until...

...you get back to class and write all about it!
